American Smoketree is a magnificent multi-stemmed shrub or tree with a colorful fall foliage. It can turn into brilliant shades of orange, red, purple and yellow. It has a compact, fluffy, pink to purple pink flowers that gives off a smoky look. It has both male and female flowers that blooms during early Spring. It produces small berries that look like kidneys, with seeds that are food to some birds. Its sap has an intense aroma and its orange-yellow heartwood can be utilized to make orange or yellow dyes. It can grow up to 30 feet tall and can spread up to 20 feet. It blooms best under full sun. It grows best in loamy and well-drained soils but is adaptable to a huge selection of soil types, which includes rocky and clay soils. It tolerates drought and almost all diseases. Make sure not to put too much fertilizer or water for it to grow properly.
